Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout
“I have been drinking dark beer for 59 years. This is the best tasting stout I’ve ever had!!!!! Better than Guiness and all the rest. California to Kentucky..Wow..I will continue to buy it.”
Vince Ziegler M.D. – Louisville, KY
With its deep, dark brown-black color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouth feel, mocha character, and, strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest, richest, and most complex stouts on the market today. In 1990, it became our first gold medal winner, at the Great American Beer Festival. Barney Flats was judged so superior to the other stouts that no other medals were even awarded in its category. Try it and see why Stewart Kallen described it as, “Slippery, creamy, dark, and sweet as a Pacific May morning,” in his book, The 50 Greatest Beers in the World.
Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout won the Silver Medal at the 2004 World Beer Cup® and the Bronze Medal at the 2004 GABF, and most recently won the Gold Medal at the 2009 L.A. County Fair International Commercial Beer Competition as well as several other medals. Click here to see the entire list.
As with all of our products, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is never sterile filtered nor heat pasteurized, and should be stored in refrigeration. However, to fully enjoy its rich and complex flavor, it should be served between 40° and 45°F

I purchased this beer last night at my local craft brew store as I am drawn towards stouts. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up a 6-pack. I cracked one open after dinner and I have to say this is a tasty beer, of the few stouts I’ve tried I enjoy this one the best. Very smooth, not bitter and very drinkable. Excellent beer, I will be buying again.

[...] I was consistent in my uncharacteristic avoidance of superhoppiness with some Trumer Pils (from Berkeley…and Austria) as well as another Anderson Valley offering, the Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. [...]

I am a stout drinker first and fore most by choice. Watney’s cream stout was my first love. After it became extinct in NA I searched years for an equal. Only two years ago I came across a close replacement in St.Peters cream stout. Not quite as enjoyable as the WCS was but I was stoked to find one I could enjoy not just like.
Then six month’s ago at a select spirits only store in Tyngsboro (sp?) MA I was shelf shopping and came across the BF OS. Familiar with AVBC but clueless to this beer. Until now. If I am lucky enough to get this fresh it has won my heart. And taste buds. It maintains a rich head that produces more aroma and flavor then the afermentioned two.
Keep up the good work and I will continue to support you regularly!
What would really make me happy is if you’d load this in a mini 5L keg to fit my krups tap. Know that would be heaven sent!
THANK YOU!

I joined a beer club recently with 5 other guys. We each got 4 beers from 19 different cases. The first one I tried was the Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. It was without a doubt the best. I will be going to get another case real soon.

Out of all the beers, ales and stouts at Alefest 09 San antonio, I think the Oatmeal Stout won my heart over. Just wish I can have me one now :)

I bought this beer by default…it was default of my local liquor store, they never told me about this wonderfull brew. Barney Flatts is by far the best Stout I have ever tasted. This stout kills any Taddy Caster or Oatmeal themed Stout out there. Wonderfull smoothness, roasty flavor and pure sweetwater make the finish very pleasing, leaving you with the need to go right back to the liquor store and by another one. This beer is wonderfull, please don’t change a thing.

Being from Philadelphia and having many good local breweries to choose from, I still find myself picking up a case of this beer, it is the best single beer I have ever had…HANDS DOWN! Love it, keep up the good work guys.

Every time I open one of these, I think that it can’t be as good as I remember. Then I take a sip and realize it is better.

I was working in a fine wine shop in Ohio back in 1993 when Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout changed the way I thought about beer and life. It remains as one of the finest beers I have ever tried and Anderson Valley ranks highly amongst the best brewing companies in the world.

I was introduced to AVBC’s Dark Porter on New Years and fell in love. AVBC’s beer is awesome. Everything I’ve had thus far from AVBC has been the best hands down. The Oatmeal Stout is my favorite. It’s crazy how good it is. I don’t know what kinda love you put into the mix but keep it coming. You ROCK!!!!!!!

Since I am a homebrewer, and constantly trying to perfect my oatmeal stout recipe. I decided to give your OS a try. It is excellent and has inspired me to add more hoppiness to my brews in the future. Thank you for your time and your wonderful concoction!

Greetings from the Nation’s Capital! I just wanted to let you all know that you have a lot of fans in Washington, DC. I’ve been working at the Brickskeller now for 2 years and we are proud to recommend your beers when we are asked for suggestions. Personally I love the Barney Flats Oatlmeal Stout but the Boont Amber is truly a house favorite…we simply cannot keep enough of it in stock. Keep up the good work! Cheers and Beers!

i’m not sure if this is appropriate for a website, but i would like to let you know that the barney is so good (well, it is always good) after love-making (to be polite).

Definitely one of my favorites. I love watching people’s reaction when I give them one for a try. Their faces just light up with pleasure. It up there with Anchor’s Christmas and New Years Ale. Keep it coming!!

I found a place that sells it for 7 bucks a 6-pack. It’s the only beer I buy anymore. Why settle for less? It’s the best beer I’ve ever had. Thanks……Roger

You talk so much about how clean your brews are that I want to tell you as I sit here in front of the PC I am sipping on a Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, and as amazed that I am of the purity of taste and clearness of flavor that we know you are in heaven brewing these fine ales, or close to it! Thank you so much for your caring that you keep it simple but brew it with care.

Roasted malt dominates but not overwhelms Barney Flats, followed by an ensemble of malt, hop, and subtle sour mash flavor, with no yeast-bite. The finish suggests dry hopping. Excellent balance; it avoids the excess maltiness, sweetness, and alcohol content of all too many West Coast stouts.

I have traveled all over The United States and western Europe and and have found NO beer that compares to the taste of AVBC! My friends and I have to drive 30 miles into Maryland (on a regular 3 times a week) to buy Barney Flat’s, or the India Pale Ale. It is well worth the drive for the best tasting beer in the World. We have found a bar in Cumberland, MD called Ed’s Canal Pub that serves it cold. THANX YOU !!!!!!!!!

WOW! I had to rush to the computer after sampling this fantastic brew! As a member of beeradvocate.com, I’m contstantly trying new beers- and so far Anderson Valley has not disappinted! Thank you for brewing such wonderful beers! Here is my beeradvocate.com review:
I paid $1.69 for a 12-oz single. Holy smokes! I was away from the computer when I reviewed this beer on paper. I couldn’t wait to get back here and post this one! Black- inch of fluffy, creamy looking brown head. Light, only when held up to a VERY high wattage bulb, will trickle through here. One gorgeous brew. Sweet chocolate scent. WOW! Just about knocks me on my ass it’s so good! Perfectly balanced. Cold coffee– the best (THE BEST, I say) cold coffee I’ve had- slight hints of chocolate and winter fruits linger within… wow. VERY smooth and creamy- a dream come true! OUTSTANDING beer. I wish I would have picked up more than a single… well, this beer alone is enough to make me go to the beer store tomorrow =)
December 10th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Your suggestion to serve this beer at 40 to 45 degrees is much too cold….your stouts and ales need to be served warmer so every delicious flavor is allowed to come through. PS. The average saloon serves the beer much too cold. I’m sure the Miller Lite kegs are stored in the same cooler as the Barney Flats…so I order mine and I warm it with my hands around the glass for 5 minutes…it’s worth the wait.

I hate beer — can’t stand drinking it, in fact — yet I love your Oatmeal Stout. I don’t know if that’s considered good or bad for you, but your product tastes so marvelous, I wonder what in the heck the other guys are making.
December 10th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
nothing like a true one of a kind. in my book it deserves a truckload of gold medals keep up the great work and never change a thing

This one of the two finest Oatmeal Stouts that I have tasted in my pursuit of great brews. The wife and I look forward to visiting you brewery this summer. This brew goes great with Greek food such as feta cheese, kalmata olives, and tzatziki to name a few items that are hard to pair with most drinks. Thanks for giving us this great brew!

Hot Damn, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of, if not the best stouts in this free country. It’s hard to obtain where I live, and so when I see it stocked, I buy all i can.
2-3-4 of these will do you right…
Good stuff, rob
December 10th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
WOW; rich, creamy and sweet describe my first experience with this oatmeal stout. I have been to europe and have brewed some of my own and this one surely tops all of them!
December 10th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Every Friday I reward myself, for successes and hard work, with one carefully chosen beer. Our local store carries over 200 varieties, so I have slowly toured the world’s best beers of all varieties. But a really good week in a very good month deserves Barney Flats, the best of the world’s best.
December 10th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Just outstanding! I just wish I could find it in South Carolina.
